Name: Cody Michael Versteeg
How Long have you been at Fitness HQ/Frantic: 2.5 years
What brought you through our doors?
I first learnt of frantic through my amazing girlfriend Emily (Bong) and being your typical 24/7 gym goer at the time, Crossfit had quite the reputation on the internet of being silly, dangerous (injury wise) and the athletes that do anything to cheat reps. I used to give her so much g
rief for beinga crossfitter until i came down and watched her compete at Riverside Jam and saw a brief glimpse of what the sport was, including khan porter lifting heavy weights. I had hit a plateau in my training at jetts and was keen to give it a go to seewhat Em was harping on about, but to be quite honest with you, i secretly think she was hoping id get crushed in my first session to shut me up.
What do you remember about your first day?
My first day at crossfit was quite the eye opener, and in two words to some it up: OLY LIFTING. I had absolutely no idea about technique, clean and jerk, snatch, deadlift form, the list goes on. I remember distinctly trying to process all the information and applying it to my new found lifts and credit where credit is due, the coaching at Frantic is top shelf stuff. It was also the first time i really understood the sense of community Em was talking about, seeing all the friendships she had made in one gym in comparison to curls in the mirror by yourself.
What workout stands out to you the most and why?
I still bring it up from time to time and it was maybe my 3rd session at Frantic. Em had brought me down to a saturday 9:30 class (partner wod). Out of my few interactions with everyone at the gym my strongest connection was Eddie, being a fellow carpenter, and I was paired with him. Little did i know at the time, Eddie had just the won the in house comp and i was completely naive as to how fit he actually was. And so begun the crucifixion Em had secretly hoped for. I tried my hardest to keep up with Eddie, despite our difference in fitness levels he still split the wod up 50/50. Looking back now, that saturday must have been a very relaxed morning for Eddie which ending with yours truly, the crossfit hater fertilising the car park tree with his breakfast. That saturday was the turning point for me and I’ve been training at frantic/HQ for over 2 years now.
If you could have any super power what would it be and why:
When i was little my answer to this question would be to fly, becuase we always want what we can’t have. But my educated answer would be to control energy/matter. The reason being 2 part:
- a) I’m a massive Dragon Ball Z fan, still to this day and they control they inner energy to perfom ki blasts and train hard to become stronger.
- b) If you could manipulate matter at your own will, there’s not much you couldn’t achieve (just like dr manhattan).
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be?
Lamb. I love lamb.
